New Targets...

So if you have seen our just giving website lately.. you will see that we have.... BLITZED OUR TARGET!! YAY!! So, we have decided to keep going and see how much we can raise!

Speaking to the Watoto team yesterday, they have recently changed their conditions for teams going out to build houses.. they now require the £8000 for the house, and then a further £8000 for infrastructure. The reason behind this is that people are donating enough to build the house, but now, there are homes built, but the kids cant live in them yet as the surrounding areas are not ready... so... we have increased our target to a WHOPPING £16000! So lets see how we go! (we are still going to go by the way, and our money will be used whereever is needed!).

We are currently at £12,300 = £3,700 to go....!

Thanks to everyone who made it to the quiz last night! We had a great time and the winning team was 'google us' who powered ahead and left the rest of us in their tracks! Well done guys!! We raised a total of £168.00 last night!

Next event coming up is the Cultural Evening on Sat 17March - a night not to be missed!

Location: St Agnes Church Hall, Kennington Park Gardens, SE17 3NP Nearest Tube: Kennington (one stop from Waterloo)
Time: from 7pm to start at 7:30pm
Date: Weds 14 March
Suggested donation per person: £5 (please bring cash!) BYO
All proceeds will go to Watoto Child Care Ministries.

Teams will be for up to 6 people - either come as a team or individually and we will make up teams on the night.

Cultural Event - 17March 2007

With the success we had at the last cultural event.. run by the amazing duo - Alice and Adam.... they are putting on another one to raise more money for our Watoto fund!!

There will be a range of top-class performances.. with singing, dancing, and acting!

Tickets are £10 each, will be held at the same place, near old street tube station. From 7pm.

Tickets will be available at church on Sunday.

There was another group of people from our church that were also rasing the money for a house.. they did a MAMMOTH 2 day walk in Wales, and managed to raise about £4500! Well done guys!!
But unfortunately they were unable to keep going, and have graciously decided to give their money to us - to go towards our house! Thanks so much beautiful people!!

So.. currently we are on £10,500... £500 to go... !!!!
We have a quiz night, a chocolate and champaige testing evening, and hopefully and 80's finale party to celebrate our completion and congratulate ourselves!!

I'll keep you posted with the events coming up, as they are finalised.

Successful Fundraising Ideas

DVD night.

A good way to raise money - invite some friends over to watch a few DVD's, chat, etc. With a pot for donations, and perhaps a few leaflets explaining what Watoto is and what we are trying to acheive.
I would recommend £3 minimum donation or whatever people are prepared to give. Also, perhaps ask everyone to bring either a snack or something to drink, so that one person doesnt end up buying everything!
Another good tip is to rent dvd's from a local library rather than a video store as it is cheaper and they usually have a pretty good selection. People from Seven Sisters and Walthamstow got together to raise some money doing this, and it was a great success!

Orphans Christmas Down Under!

Some amazing people from the other side of the world decided to have an 'Orphans Christmas' this year. This entailed a whole bunch of people from all over the world, coming together in Sydney, Australia to spend Christmas together as they were away from their families.
They had an awesome time, and raised AUD$140 for our house! (thats about £60!)

Bunty's Coffee Morning - 25th November 2006

Margot's family friend had a coffee morning to raise ££ for our house... here's what she has to say!

I was so impressed when listening to the story told by Margot regarding help given to Watoto by a number of dedicated friends, that I volunteered at short notice to offer my home to hold a coffee morning to raise funds and a little publicity to this good work.

I am an 84-year-old Second World War proud ex Wren, unable either physically or financially able to help overseas, so was delighted to rally up friends to give their time and money. The sun was shining and the morning was a huge success, a splendid number of people enjoyed coffee, a chat and happily bought from the Bring and Buy table. One friend showing initiative dashed out and gathered the windfall apples from my garden and sold them!

Mary, my friend, handed round a lovely picture of two beautiful children and explained to everyone what Watoto is all about.

God willing, I will do the same again next year.

I wish the group great success.

They raised just over £200 for us!

60% of Target!!

Can you believe that we are at 60% of our £11,000 target already!

If you have a spare moment, check out our justgiving website - we are currently at £6,609.05!!

We have decided to increase our target by £3000 to take into account infrastructure for the village - so stuff like the footpaths, landscaping, sewerage and roads etc. Its so exciting!

Soon, we are going to have enough money to build one of these!!!!

Following on from the sucess of our last one in the summer, we are ready to put on one of the biggest events in the Watoto calendar!

28 Oct is the Date
7pm-11pm is the time.

The location will be set at 16 Marlborough Court, Pembroke Road

All drinks and nibbles will be provided, with a donation of £10-15.

Trash and Treasure!

On Saturday we had our Clothes swap/sale at Andrea's place in Pimlico and it was a HUGE success! Many people donated their unwanted, but AMAZING(!) clothes and accessories... we displayed them like a little boutique shop - it was so cute!
People came - people tried and people buyed! By the end of the day, we managed to raise over £300.00! Yay team!

We still have heaps of clothes and shoes left over, so we packed them all up and will be bringing them out again for our car boot sale this Saturday!

We will be heading to a school in Kilburn with 2 car loads of stuff and hopefully we'll be able to sell a lot of it for our Watoto house!

So if you're free on Saturday morning, come and find us at the car boot sale in Kilburn - we'll be there with bells on! We'll have big signs saying that we're rasing the funds for Watoto so come and say hi, buy stuff and dontate to a fantastic cause!!

Calling all Girls..!

The truth: we all have clothes that we wondered why we bought and now have barely warn (some still have the tags on). Sound familiar...?

WE HAVE THE ANSWER

We are having an informal clothes auction where you can donate these clothes and buy some new ones at extraordinarily reduced prices.

All proceeds go to Watoto Childrens Ministry. We are raising money to build a home for orphaned children in Uganda. We aim to raise £8000 before April 2007.

WHAT TO BRING: Clothes, shoes, accessories, jewellery, shoes, hand bags. (Be ruthless girls). Or just bring yourself
(Spare coat hangers).

HOW TO PAY: Cheque, cash, and computers avail for online giving via our official charity "Just Giving" website.

We survived the walk!

We survived the 15mile walk!
Last saturday about 15people took part in our sponsored walk from Putney to Greenwich along the Thames.. approximately 15miles!
The weather was fantastic, the company was great, and the best thing was that we all made it by sundown!
We all saw some amazing parts of London that I never knew existed, and also realised just how far away Greenwich actually is! :-)
With all the walkers combined we will have hopefully raised over £900! Our biggest event so far!

We are contemplating doing it again to see if we can raise it a second time.. maybe in a few months when we have recovered some what!

On the 16th of September, we will be having our sponsored 'Riverside Walk'!

We are walking along the Thames from Putney to Greenwich in order to raise money for our Watoto house. Its on Saturday 16th September starting any time between 10 and 10.30am from the north side of Putney Bridge and finishing with a picnic in Greenwich park.

Maps will be provided at the start point if needed!

It's just under 15miles, so get your walking shoes on!

You can use the sponsorship form provded to raise money, or come along and make a donation on the day. Please invite friends, colleagues and family to in with us and enjoy a great day out together for Watoto!

Saturday was a SUCCESS!!

We would like to thank everyone for coming on saturday to both the pilates and the wine and cheese night!! It was a HUGE success!!

Pilates was great... there were 18 of us there, and raised £130.00!

Then, in the evening, about 40-50 people came to support us at our wine and cheese night in Kensington, and we collected over £400!

We have heaps of wine left over, so we will be having another one later in the year...

Pilates - 29July @ 1pm

On Saturday 29July at 1pm we will be holding our 2nd Pilates session to raise money for Watoto! I'm excited, and so are my stomach muscles!!

Our first was a great success.. there was about 20 of us, and we raised £150.00! This time we hope to aim it - both by the amount of people coming, and the money raised!

Our Pilates Instructor is Suzie Wilson, please check out her website!

It will be held at St Agnes Church, Kennington SE17 3NP at 1pm. Afterwards, lets all head home, and get ready for our wine and cheese even in Kensington at 7pm!

Recommended donation for the pilates will be £6.00

Curry! 01July

A group of us love getting together, and we love curry. So on Saturday July 1st we decided to have a curry in aid of the Watoto children.

Jude, our very own magnificent curry chef from Tamil Madu is well known for his yummy curries, and after cooking up a storm in March, he has been much in demand.... and he did not disappoint!

Hosted by our ever-hospitable Alice, there were around 20 of us. As we are from all over the world, there was a loud appreciation for both the curry and the World Cup (England vs Portugal and Brazil vs France - we had representatives from all those countries). A fun time was had by all and we raised £85!

I wonder what we be on the menu next time?!!

It is an honor

A few of us got together last week for a planning session and one thing that came up was this:

James 1:27 (New Living Translation)
Pure and lasting religion in the sight of God our Father means that we must care for orphans and widows in their troubles, and refuse to let the world corrupt us.

This is what makes Watoto so amazing.. they are doing exactly this! Not only are they looking after the orphans, but they are also looking after the widows. In Uganda, women don't have the same rights and freedom as we do here in the western world, so when their husbands die from Aid's or the like, they are abandoned. Much the same as the children. So when Watoto build these houses, they find these women, and save them from a life of hunger, abandonment and poverty, and give them a life of worth. They are given an instant family to care for, and a community to belong to. Most importantly, they are given a life with Christ.

I am honored to be a part of this.

Thanks so much for visiting our blog!

We are a few friends, getting together to raise the £8000 needed to build a home in Uganda for Watoto Ministries. This home will house 6-8 aids-orphaned kids and a house mother in Kampala, Uganda. We are very excited to be doing this, and this blog is to keep people informed on how much we have raised, and what fundraising events we have coming up around London in the next 9 months!

We thank everyone for their support, and who knows... We might be able to raise enough money for maybe 2 or 3 houses!
